You guys! I can’t believe it is December 27th. This month flew by!! I had so many posts that I wanted to do, but honestly I am just EXHAUSTED. Kensley started sleeping so terribly at the beginning of this month, which was unexpected because according to the most amazing Iphone app (inspired by the book), The Wonder Weeks, Kensley just finished her 5th leap. Her previous leaps worked out so that as soon as it ended she would immediately go back to sleeping well throughout the night. I know everyone’s idea of “sleeping through the night” is different, but starting at about 4 weeks Kensley was sleeping a stretch from about 10-5, which was let’s just say **magical**. Then when we hit the 4 month sleep regression, right alongside the 4th leap, she started waking up a few times in the night. Well, I typically nurse Kensley and she goes right back to sleep. I used to be really good about nursing her and then putting her back in the pack n play next to our bed after she was asleep, but after the 5th leap she started getting to the point where she was waking up MULTIPLE times, and some nights wouldn’t sleep anywhere but right next to me.
My husband and I decided that after Christmas we would commit to moving her to her own room in her crib. I think that she was ready for this AWHILE ago, but Jake and I just miss her so much when she isn’t with us!!! So selfish… I know. Haha. Anyways, you guys would be so proud of Kensley AND me. I stuck to our decision and put Kensley down to sleep in her crib last night. She did so well. She only woke up two times, which compared to the last couple weeks is a major improvement. She was nursing at least 4-6 times in the middle of the night in our room so… YAY. I am so so happy. In order to nurse her to sleep and wake up in the middle of the night I ended up buying a used rocking chair today. This chair looks so vintage and cute. I can’t wait to fix it up. I just used it to put her down for a nap and she was asleep so fast. It’s such a happy and sad feeling knowing that she is now in her crib. Our little baby girl is growing up before our eyes. Better start planning that first birthday party now!!!
Even with the lack of sleep, Jake and I agree this was the best Christmas we have ever had. Kensley’s first Christmas could not have been more special or memorable simply because we were able to spend it with her and our loved ones.
Christmas Eve we spent with Jake’s family. My MIL prepared a beautiful beef wellington which I have never had before and am now wondering why I haven’t…it’s now on my bucketlist of things to make. In the past, we used to spend the night at his parents house so we could spend Christmas morning there. This year we wanted to spend Christmas morning at our house so we exchanged presents that night. Kensley got the cutest outfits and some fun toys!! We are so lucky to have all our family nearby to celebrate together.
Started new traditions, like wearing family matching pajamas on Christmas morning. We were supposed to wear them to bed Christmas Eve but we were all so tired, even Kensley slept hard that night, so we ended up just putting them on in the morning! Still just as fun. Kensley had so much fun eating the wrapping paper on the presents we got her, haha.
We had my dad, Kensley’s Grandpa, and his wife over for Christmas morning brunch and Kensley gave my dad the best gift ever… she didn’t cry when he held her!! For some reason a couple weeks ago Kensley started being apprehensive of certain people which included him. They had fun opening some gifts and playing with the new toy he got her. I made an awesome sausage and cornbread breakfast casserole, recipe courtesy of the Mix & Match Mama, which was a hit! If you don’t make a casserole for Christmas morning breakfast, you’re doing it wrong!!
After my dad left we got ready and headed out to visit my grandma, Kensley’s great grandma, at a rehabilitation center she is currently recovering at after having surgery from falling. While we were visiting Kensley was given a beautiful heirloom from my grandma. This necklace was given to my grandma by HER grandma. Her grandma purchased it from Shreve & Company, and every year added two baby pearls to the necklace – one for her birthday and one for Christmas. It was the most thoughtful and sweet present, Jake and I could hardly keep back tears when she was telling us the story. I can’t wait till Kensley is old enough to appreciate how special this gift is and how much it means to me that my grandma gave it to her.
After visiting my grandma, we headed to my mom’s house for Christmas dinner. There we celebrated with my brother and fiance, my mom, my aunt and her fiance, and that was it!! Super small. Normally we have my cousins over as well, but with my mom still recovering from hip surgery and my grandparents at the rehab center my mom decided to keep it a small crowd. My mom made spare ribs and they were AMAZING, I need to share with you all that recipe soon! SO grateful to be able to to see all our loved ones for Kensley’s first Christmas. And to think next year will be even better than this year!!
I am super bummed I didn’t get to as many blogposts as I wanted to share, but I know next year I will hopefully be a little LESS tired (wishful thinking?) and can make up for it! Next year I will also be doing a little cookie tutorial with my aunt, because I seriously messed up our traditional cookies we make. My aunt and I were talking about how the old recipes don’t tell you all the little secrets that make the recipe actually WORK.. lol. This is why I love recipes from blogs and what I hope to share with you all!
Hoping you all had a wonderful Christmas and will be enjoying the upcoming New Year’s.
